Maupiti is similar in appearance to Bora Bora, although with a smaller lagoon and fewer fringing islands it is far less commercial with just a few guesthouses. There are no hotels and few organized tours here so bring your sense of adventure to explore the island.<br>
<br>
Mt. Hotu Paraoa tumbles into the sea at 250 metres tall and dominates the main village of Vaiea beneath its peak. Vaiea Village and Farauru stretch along the west coast of Maupiti and make up most of the islands population. Tereia Beach is the only white sandy beach on the main island of Maupiti and is usually deserted.<br>
<br>
The luminous lagoon around Maupiti is excellent for swimming and snorkelling. Local fishermen hire out their boats to tourists for day trips around the islands.<br>
<br>
Motu Pitiahe is one of only five islands surrounding the outer reef and has the islands only accessible passage. A white sandy deserted beach encircles almost the entire island of Motu Tiapuu which can be walked around in about an hour. There's a lovely beach on the west coast of Motu Tiapaa looking across the lagoon to Motu Pitiahe.<br>
<br>
Motu Pareao is the smallest of the islands around Maupiti. Beach front at Pension Pareao, one of only a handful of guesthouses on Maupiti. <br>
