Nuku Hiva is the administrative capital of the Marquesas and the easiest to explore with excellent hiking trails, high mountain peaks (the highest being 1224 metres) and lots of deep bays. Nuku Hiva has many interesting archaeological sites around the island and one of the worlds tallest waterfalls at Hakaui at 350 metres. Rugged mountains, cliffs and deep bays make Nuku Hiva a popular scuba diving and sailing destination. Humpback whales and other large marine mammals can often be spotted from shore.
With few beaches, Hiva Oa has spectacular mountains and coastal scenery and many rich archaeological sites. Horseback is a good way to explore the island of Hiva Oa which has several tracks around the island.
