Raiatea is considered the sailing hub of Tahiti with its deep lagoon and protected bays. Sailing in the lagoon between Raiatea and Tahaa. This area is one of the most popular sailing destinations in the South Pacific.<br> <br> Uturoa on the north coast of Raiatea is the second largest town in French Polynesia with a busy port. There are some good hiking trials around Temehani Plateau just inland from Utoroa Town.<br> <br> The rugged east coast of Raiatea has only a few villages and virtually no accommodation. Life here is very rural and tourists few and far between. There's the beautiful Hamoa waterfall on the east coast but most of the steep mountains on Raiatea are inaccessible.<br> <br> The string of Motu Islets along the fringing reef of Northern Tahaa make excellent day trips. Outrigger canoe day excursion to the offshore Motu are one of the highlights of Tahaa.<br> <br> The hills of Tahaa offer ideal growing conditions for Vanilla. There is virtually no tourist developments except on the offshore islands and the easiest way of getting around is by boat.<br> <br> The Tahaa Pearl Resort is undoubtedly the most exclusive of all Tahiti's resorts and is set in idyllic waters surrounded by uninhabited islands with views to Tahaa and Bora Bora. Vahine Island Resort is one of only two resorts on the offshore islands.
